Korean films strike me as being very boring and light mindless entertainment when they start out, gradually developing a plot as time goes on, and then ending with a striking surprise that gives meaning to all the pain and torture in the beginning. This is definitely true of this movie. Rules of Datings was one of the surprise blockbuster hits of the year and definitely gives us an idea of why some korean films are heralded as the media masterpeices. Rules of dating redefines the meaning of trauma. Trauma, for those of us who've experienced it, causes infinite unforgettable pain to the victim. It is regrettable but true that it also imparts on its victims a need for revenge.

The characters are undeniably well developed in this story and are jewels. I nearly gave up on the movie and if it were not for its widely accalimed reputation, I probably would've. Because I kept watching, however, I saw the real reason for its genius. I won't say what because that would ruin it for everyone, but I will warn that this movie requires persistence to move through the beginning, which is indispensable to the true plot. This is definitely not a comedy, and only suitable for those who have flexible minds willing to learn more about the human tragedy.
